Gail Garceau, a wedding planer in Newport Beach, California, handles the weddings of actresses, television personalities, and professional athletes. “Brides are very Euro-savvy, that’s my term,” she says. “They want now and wow and different. It’s life in the passing lane. They’ve been to eight million weddings. They’ve seen it all.” Garceau’s brides want their weddings to be remembered above everybody else’s. They hire her to understand their vision, stick to it, and make the vendors stick to it too.
It’s tempting to think that couples want extravagance on all levels, but that’s not true, says Garceau. “They want to be surrounded by beautiful things that are also meaningful to them.” One bride with a passion for jewelry ordered individual turquoise wedding cakes made to look like boxes from Tiffany’s-right down to the ribbon.
